Attention demands of visual search.

چکیده

The relation between attention demand and the number of items in the array (array size) was investigated by engaging subjects in a primary search task and measuring spare capacity at different points in time, with a secondary tone task that occurred randomly on half of the trials. The major variables in both tasks were array size (4, 8, or 12 letters) and stimulus onset asynchrony (SOA: -400, -200,0,200,400, and 600 msec). Subjects were able to perform the tasks quite independently, and most of the interference that resulted from nonindependence appeared in tone-task performance. The amount of interference (i.e., maximum tone reaction time) was independent of array size, but the duration of interference (i.e., the number of SOAs at which tone reaction time was elevated) increased with array size. The findings were interpreted as supporting unlimited-capacity models of visual search performance.

Common capacity-limited neural mechanisms of selective attention and spatial working memory encoding

One characteristic feature of visual working memory (WM) is its limited capacity, and selective attention has been implicated as limiting factor. A possible reason why attention constrains the number of items that can be encoded into WM is that the two processes share limited neural resources. Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) studies have indeed demonstrated commonalities between th...

The spatial profile of the focus of attention in visual search: Insights from MEG recordings

The spatial focus of attention has been suggested to resemble a spotlight, a zoom-lens, a simple gradient, or even a more complex center-surround profile. Here we review evidence from neuromagnetic recordings indicating that the spatial profile is not fixed but depends on the particular perceptual demands of the attention task. We show that visual search requiring spatial scrutiny for target di...

Is visual attention required for robust picture memory?

Humans can remember many scenes for a long time after brief presentation. Do scene understanding and encoding processes require visual selective attention, or do they occur even when observers are engaged in other visual tasks? We showed observers scene or texture images while they performed a visual search task, an auditory detection task, or no concurrent task. Concurrent tasks interfered wit...

Common neural substrates for visual working memory and attention.

Humans are severely limited in their ability to memorize visual information over short periods of time. Selective attention has been implicated as a limiting factor. Here we used functional magnetic resonance imaging to test the hypothesis that this limitation is due to common neural resources shared by visual working memory (WM) and selective attention. We combined visual search and delayed di...

Visual selective attention in amnestic mild cognitive impairment.

OBJECTIVES Subtle deficits in visual selective attention have been found in amnestic mild cognitive impairment (aMCI). However, few studies have explored performance on visual search paradigms or the Simon task, which are known to be sensitive to disease severity in Alzheimer's patients. Furthermore, there is limited research investigating how deficiencies can be ameliorated with exogenous supp...

بررسی مجموعه آزمون‌های عصب- روان‌شناختی در تشخیص رانندگان اتوبوس بین شهری متخلف و شایسته

AbstractObjectives: This study has been carried out with the aim of investigating motor, cognitive and executive functions of a group of accident-prone drivers. Method: Seventy professional accident-prone drivers with major faults and 30 drivers recognized as good and safe drivers, were examined using tests that assessed reaction time, recognition, memory, attention and concentration, as well a...
